You Have to See This

For all those who think McCain will be a good president . . . for all those who think McCain is a moral man . . . (and for those of us who don’t) . . .

[Update: Disclaimer – It’s supposed to be funny and part of the joke is that it is parodying an Obama video that was made in earnest, oh and yes, Jo Cose kindly points out that some of the quotes used in the song may be taken out of context]:

10 Reasons Why I Hate the Movie Version of Stardust

“Stardust (Widescreen Edition)” (Paramount) This was one of the most disappointing movies I’ve watched in a long, long time. Despite the fact quite a few people seemed to enjoy it, Stardust was a mediocre movie at best, and a huge let-down for me after listening to Neil Gaiman’s reading of his book for Audible.com. I …

Put Your Politics Where Your Mouth Is

Cnet News has an excellent article about the recent vote on telco immunity: The vote was on an amendment to deny AT&T and other telecommunications companies legal immunity if they are proven in court to have violated federal privacy law by opening their networks to the National Security Agency. Obama voted for the Amendment. McCain …

Torchwood Babiez

For fans of Torchwood (or fans of Doctor Who who gave up on the spin-off after the first several episode of the first series) – you should head over to Torchwood Babiez and check out the really great webcomic that they are creating. Scroll to the bottom of the webpage to find the starting point. The art is wonderfully done and the writing is full of inside jokes for the fans.twbabiez_page_1.pngLink (Via IO9.com)

New 10 Minute Play

As promised, a comedy. Of sorts. At least I find it amusing. Special thanks to EscapePod.org for publishing a great series of superhero stories (of course thanks to Jeffrey R. Derego for writing them!) and providing me the inspiration to find a way to work tyromancy and sycomancy into a play.

Without further ado:

Who Knew?

So, in my latest ten minute play, I am referencing a type of fortune telling that uses figs. Yes, figs. It’s called sycomancy and I was wondering what the preface “syc” meant since “sychophant” seemed to have nothing to do with figs. Goes to show you what I know:

sycophant 1537 (in L. form sycophanta), “informer, talebearer, slanderer,” from L. sycophanta, from Gk. sykophantes, originally “one who shows the fig,” from sykon “fig” + phanein “to show.” “Showing the fig” was a vulgar gesture made by sticking the thumb between two fingers, a display which vaguely resembles a fig, itself symbolic of a cunt (sykon also meant “vulva”). The story goes that prominent politicians in ancient Greece held aloof from such inflammatory gestures, but privately urged their followers to taunt their opponents. The sense of “mean, servile flatterer” is first recorded in Eng. 1575. Online Etymology Dictionary, © 2001 Douglas Harper [From sycophant – Definitions from Dictionary.com]

Spaceport America Update

Those of you who know me have heard me talk about the spaceport that is being built in NM. I posted previously about how the spaceport fit in with my long-standing love of space imagery and exploration. While Jo Cose believes that the project is doomed before it’s truly begun, I have this exciting faith …

2 Quick Reviews: 300 & Casino Royale

300 brought a violent comic book to violent life, but with a stylization that actually undercut the violence. The severed limbs and the flying droplets of blood were done so crisply, with such precision that there was nothing real about any of the scenes. A sense of fabrication underlay all the violent scenes. And strangely, …
