As I mentioned recently, I am starting a new blog that will focus on my time and work as a graduate student at the University of Pittsburgh. I am pleased to announced that it is up and running at ThisThus.com. Over the next few weeks I will probably make adjustments to the look of the site as I tweak it here and there, but the first post is posted and I’m excited by the prospect of having a slightly more focused blog that will serve as both a place for me to reflect on my journey over the next several years, as well as a place to share what I learn along the way. Posts will be few and far between until the beginning to school, but I will be posting various items that have to do with preparing for both school and the move to Pittsburgh. When school starts, I hope to post regularly on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

But you few, you fearless readers of Living the Liminal should fear not! I will be keeping this space for non-PhD related topics and will never forsake you. Never ever ever!

So if following two blogs isn’t a chore, or if you are genuinely interested in following me as I go from getting into a program of my choice to completing my dissertation and getting my doctorate, I hope you will drop by and check out the new digs at http://thisthus.com.

Wherein I reflect upon the fact that I've been blogging for 5 years.

For just over five years, I’ve been writing and posting thoughts on the internet. For a short time I used Salon.com’s blogging software, then turned to Blogspot.com, and relatively soon after that, I decided to by my own domain and use WordPress to run this site. Since starting this blog I have posted 680 entries, moved web hosting servers once, lived in three different states (not counting my 2 months in New Mexico), been in two different graduate programs, have gone through two iPods, one IBM Thinkpad R31, one Emachine tower, one iMac and am currently writing this on my 2.5 year old Macbook Pro, which is running my third OS X operating system. I’ve completed several short stories, ten short plays, been published in one academic journal, presented at two academic conferences, and started one novel. I’ve done sound design for seven plays. I’ve probably gained something like fifteen pounds and am disturbingly close to forty. I am producing one podcast and may soon be producing a second podcast. I have quit smoking, developed a taste for expensive single malt scotch, become a fan of The National, The Mountain Goats, Bat for Lashes, Tim Minchin, and Sarah Haskins. I’ve seen the rebirth of Doctor Who as a program and two regenerations of the character and have read probably something close to 240 books.

So . . . in honor of five years, the always inimitable David Bowie:

I am considering what I want to do with this blog over the next year. I know that I want to give it more focus . . . though I’m not sure exactly on what at this point. So I thought I’d throw it out to you and see if any of my readers might have a preference of subject matter. To be clear, even while I hope to narrow my scope somewhat, I won’t just do one thing here.

Let me know what you’d like to see more of (and you can vote for more than one category).

Since I can no longer be an Amazon Affiliate because of a recent law passed by the RI General Assembly, I’ve decided to use the Radio Paradise Affiliate link whenever I post links to Amazon because I feel like someone should be able to take advantage of the few dollars this website generates and because, if you haven’t noticed by now, Radio Paradise is my favorite internet radio station. So, if you are interested in any of the books, movies, or music I mention or review,
I hope you will consider buying through the links I provide in order to help support a truly eclectic and independent radio station.

Seriously, when is the last time you heard this kind of musical cross-section on terrestrial radio? Additionally, Bill & Rebecca just seem like such decent and good people, and it’s inspiring to see someone living their dream. So, boo to the RI General Assembly, but yay to Radio Paradise and I am glad to send them what few dollars are generated by my links.

I’m doing sound design for the upcoming New Plays Festival at Brown University and we are heading into the last week before tech. Between my day job and working on the shows, I will be pretty busy for the next couple of weeks. Sadly, I missed posting a “Music You May Have Missed” entry on the first. Odds are, I won’t get to it until after the shows are up and running.

On a side note, can you believe we are almost through a full 1/4 of 2009? Someone needs to slow this shit down, yo!

Sorry, a bit punchy from spending most of my day in front of the computer.

Other brief bits and baubles:

“The Road” (Cormac McCarthy): compelling, dark, and really depressing . . . but I totally recommend it. Though you may want to find time when you can devote some quality hours, because it’s an intensely difficult book to put down.

Kings is a rather good new series. I was a bit skeptical, but the pilot was absorbing, well acted, and quite fascinating. You can watch it for free on Hulu, or well, there are all manner of ways to watch it. I haven’t seen past the pilot episode, but when I get time I look forward to seeing where they take the show.

Last night, I watched “Walker – Criterion Collection” (Alex Cox) and recommend it if you enjoy Alex Cox movies like Repo Man, Sid and Nancy, or The Revengers Tragedy. His website offers an interesting look at filmmaking on the fringes of fame and was what got me interested in getting this particular film.

Enough of that – time to do dishes and read The Road and try to get to bed at a decent hour.

Oh, one last thing:

With support for page creation and editing, comment moderation, and, most useful in my opinion, landscape typing, this version is a whole lot more powerful and usable for blogging while on the road (or when you are in bed already and don’t want to get up to post an entry). While certainly not the fastest way to write an entry and not ideal for writing at length, I can definitely imagine blogging more from my phone than I could before this update. And if we get Bluetooth keyboard ability with iPhone 3.0 . . .

The past couple of weeks I’ve tried several ways to put up a photo gallery on my site. I started off with hosting them on my site, but then realized that I would have to update those manually and they would only be available for people who visited LtL—and while the quality of my visitors is top-notch, the quantity is not what you might call “large.” Since I have been shooting a lot with my iPhone since I found the photo apps Photogene and CameraBag and can do a good bit of post-processing on the phone itself, and since I can upload straight from the phone to Facebook or Flickr, and since both of those options offer the opportunity for more people to see the pictures I want to share, I decided to look for a WordPress plugin that would display photos hosted from one of those sites.

I have settled on Slickr Gallery and am fairly pleased with how it incorporates into my site. The upshot of all this, however, is that I’m beginning to take my Flickr account more seriously. While I will continue to post the occasional picture directly to Facebook or even in individual posts here, Flickr will become the place where I host the majority of pictures that I take and want to share with others. I’m even considering upgrading to the “Pro” version, which, at $25/year is not a bad price for unlimited uploads and storing.

Check out my “Pictures” page and let me know what you think of my current solution.
